The Argentina international beat Mario Gomez and Cristiano Ronaldo to the individual trophy this term following his 14 strikes throughout the season
Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi has finished the 2011-12 Champions League campaign as top scorer with 14 goals in 11 appearances, thus equaling Jose Altafini's European Cup record from 1962-63 for AC Milan.
The Argentina international netted twice against BATE, three times against Plzen and once versus Milan to make it six from five games in the group stages.
The 24-year-old then found the net on six more occasions in the two round-of-16 games against Bayer Leverkusen, before adding two more to his tally in the quarterfinal tie against Milan.
Messi was unable to beat Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in the semifinals, though, as Barca fell to a shock 3-2 defeat on aggregate.
